My Futures So Bright

If you don’t understand the reference of my title, then you are WAY younger than I am!  And if you do, I know you were a true 80’s baby!

After making Monday night’s post, my husband pointed out that I did not open with a personal prologue.  Since I am the one actually writing this thing, I should probably do that going forward.

This blog has been getting some traction!  THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!  It is so nice to know that there are people actually reading it and enjoying it.  Stay tuned – I have a lot more great “stuff” to come!!

IT’S RISER FRIDAY!!!  Let’s kick it!

CELEBRITY NEWS:

In an interview with E! News, Lady Antebellum’s Hillary Scott mentioned that the band will be taking some time off after their current tour.  The hectic schedule that Scott and band members Dave Hayward and Charles Kelley have maintained since the release of their first album has not really allowed them much time off to spend with friends and family.   The break will allow the members an opportunity to regroup and write songs for their next project.  Although there is no set date for when the group will be back in action, Scott assures that it won’t be forever, “Knowing us, it will probably be a lot shorter than what we probably set out for it to be because we can’t ever really stop.”  Enjoy your much deserved (and needed) break, Lady A!

Kacey Musgraves has decided to add shoe designer to her resume.  The Texan songstress has teamed up with Texas boot maker Lucchese to create a small boot line.  The 4 style western-inspired collection called “Kacey for Lucchese” will be available in Lucchese stores before the 2015 holiday season and will be carried by other retail partners as well.  The boots are expected to retail between $300 – $450 US per pair.  The line, inspired by her life and career over the last few years, means a lot to Musgraves, “Every detail on each boot in this line represents sentiments and pieces of me and my career.”

Although Carrie Underwood is loving being a mother to son Isaiah, she admitted to WUSN/Chicago that it also adds a certain level of excitement to her life.  Last month Underwood’s family came to see them off at the airport.  Underwood got out of the car, closed the door and turned around to open the back door to retrieve the luggage.  Within an instant, her dogs Ace and Penny started to act up and one of the pooches stepped on the lock, locking them in the car with her infant child.  “Of course nobody had a spare set of keys.  It was my Inlaws’ car.  We were trying to jimmy the door open…”  They eventually had to break the window to enter the car.  Thankfully, everyone was alright.  It is safe to say that Ace and Penny will NOT be hearing the phrase “Wanna go for a car ride?” any time soon.

COUNTRY FASHION:

I would personally like to thank Eric Church for continually sporting Ray Ban Aviators because they are freaking awesome! I love mine and I love them on other people.  This classic style of sunglasses is by far my favorite.  Originally, the “Aviator” style was sold in 1936 by Bausch and Lomb.  The target market was pilots due to that fact that the purpose of the slightly convex lens was to cover as much of the human eye range as possible, thus protecting their eyes while flying.  There is also a style of aviator that was referred to as “The Outdoorsman” which featured a sweat bar across the top.  Although Bausch and Lomb was the originator of this classic, the style marketed by Ray Ban is the original Bausch and Lomb style.  It had a large following for many decades and could be seen on celebrities.  Everyone from Kim Novak to Bob Marley wore them.  In the 2000’s, Ray Ban released the “Never Hide” campaign, encouraging people to express their originality and to not fear judgement, causing a resurgence of the once highly coveted style. Now, they are “a thing” once again, with people from all walks of life (including myself) sporting this timeless piece.  Obviously there are other brands that have an aviator “style”, but if you want the real deal, Ray Ban is the way to go. Ranging from $120 – $250, Ray Ban offers bang for your buck!

COUNTRY MUSIC:

If you haven’t heard of Nashville transplant Bobby McClendon, I suspect that you soon will.  On a stormy day in Nashville, he took some time to have a chat with me.  Not only is he a fantastic performer, but he is a genuinely nice guy.

Bobby has been in Nashville now for 3 ½ years, leaving his job as a bank manager in Yuma, Arizona to pursue his dream. “I want to be 40 saying either I gave it a shot and was successful or being able to say I at least gave it a shot.”  Bobby went on to say, “You know, so when I get older I had success or at least be able to say I tried.”  He attributes his love of country music to how he grew up, “I grew up around rodeo.  In southwest Arizona there is a lot of rodeo.  So I love all that cowboy rodeo stuff.”

He started playing music 12 years prior to his arrival in Nashville, keeping it local in his home town and playing while he was in high school.  But a huge life-changing moment came for him when he was 16.  If you ask Bobby who his musical influences are, he would say his number one of all time is Chris LeDoux.  “When I was in high school back in Arizona I was in a show choir and we got to set up all the sound and lighting for concerts that came to my home town. A lot of the other artists that came to town would kick us out or ignore us.  The first thing I noticed about Chris LeDoux was that he changed his own guitar strings.  He showed me how to change them on his guitar and showed me how to play my first G chord.  He was just the most down to earth, awesome person. [He] talked to everybody, met us all on stage and asked us what song we wanted to hear. I was like ‘Oh – it can’t be a super popular one.  Why don’t you play Western Skies, you know because it wasn’t out heavily on the radio.”  Bobby remembers the moment fondly, “It was just really awesome and then he went out there and put on the best show I have ever seen in my life.  It was wonderful.  So he will always be number one for me.”

Aerosmith is another big influence for McClendon, “When it comes to ones where I kinda like what I saw and tried to tailor what I do live show wise, I am a huge Aerosmith fan. I’ve seen them 6 times and every time it was a different show and absolutely amazing.”

Bobby went quiet for a moment.  At first I thought the call dropped.  He chuckled “The alarm on my phone went off telling me it’s time to get ready for my show.”  I offered to wrap it up, but being the guy that he is he said, “We’ve got lots of time.”  With that as my cue, I continued my line of questioning.

Garth Brooks is an influence for many country artists, and Bobby is no different, “I grew up on country and Garth Brooks made a huge impression when it came to music and live stuff. When I was in high school it is what I tried to mimic before I grew up and kind of came in to my own.  It was Garth that I always wanted to be.”

I decided to take a path less travelled and ask a couple of questions that maybe weren’t conventional.  I was curious to find out what makes someone like this tick; someone who was willing to leave home, give up a regular job and take this kind of a risk.  When I asked what was something he had always wanted and if he had gotten it, McClendon responded, “Not yet…but we’re working on it. I’ve always wanted to be on a major tour.  I want to hear people singing my songs on the radio, people covering my songs in bars and things like that.  We are almost there.  We are having some successes with our single and people recognize me in places.  Hopefully that is going to lead to more people knowing my music, getting it out there more  and actually getting to play our own stuff rather than covering everywhere we go.”

One thing that is important to remember when dealing with the people in this industry, is that they also have a human side.  No matter how big they get or how hard they work, they still have lives outside of this business.  I asked Bobby what cheers him up when he isn’t feeling 100%.  “I’ve got a phone full of all of my pictures of my kids.  My kids live back in Arizona.  I’ve got videos and pictures that daily I am going through.  That’s always been the number one thing that cheers me up.”  Evidence supported this when I asked him what the last photo he took with his phone was. “The last photo I took with my phone (Bobby goes quiet to look through his phone)…” He came back on the line and said, “The last photo I took with my phone was of my son the day he got his first football gear 2 weeks ago.  He is 7 years-old.”  Bobby went quiet for a second, “The last picture I have is him in his full football uniform.”  It is obvious at this moment that not only is Bobby a nice guy but he is completely in love with his kids.

In closing, I asked, “You are sitting on the porch with your grandson.  How do you describe this time in your life to him?”

“This is the hardest I’ve ever worked in my life.  It has been the most rewarding when it comes to actual work.  If you work hard at anything you can accomplish whatever you’re doing.  We are doing great things just off of hard work.”

I agree 100%!  Please check out Bobby’s website at www.bobbymcclendon.com/, follow him on Twitter: @BobbyMcClendon2 and be sure to check out his single “She Rolls Outta Bed” on iTunes!

In the meantime, for your listening pleasure, here is “Gonna Happen Like This” by Bobby McClendon :

You Only Love Me…

CELEBRITY NEWS:

If you are anything like me you have a soft spot for 80’s country, and that includes mother-daughter duo The Judds.  Well, these 2 lovely ladies will be reuniting this fall in Las Vegas for 9 shows at The Venetian Hotel starting October 7th.  It has been 25 years since they produced a studio album together.  It is unclear if something is in the pipeline, however the fact that the show talks about the past and “looks toward the future” indicates that there may be a collaborative project in the works.  Tickets for the Judds’ Las Vegas shows go on sale on August 28th at The Venetian box office.  Sounds like the perfect occasion for a “Girls’ Night Out” to me!

Luke Bryan is about to head out on his 7th annual Farm Tour.  This year, Bryan is getting a little help from Sam Hunt, Chris Janson, The Peach Pickers, Chancie Neal, and D.J. Rock.  A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will fund scholarships to students from farming families in communities in Indiana, Kentucky, South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama and Bryan’s home state, Georgia.

It is no secret that Toby Keith is one proud American but he is apparently also an American with a soft spot.  On August 21st at his concert in Charlotte, NC, Keith brought 93 year-old veteran Lt. Col. Harry Frizzell on stage to thank him for his 35 years of service.  After a 2 song serenade to Frizzell (including the song “American Soldier”), Keith handed the microphone to the retired serviceman.  Frizzell spoke about his time in Vietnam, Korea and World War II and said he is proud to represent the United States of America, a statement that hit home for Keith.  He may be an “Angry American” but his dedication and devotion to US servicemen and women is undeniable.

COUNTRY FASHION:

Any country girl (or guy) can tell you that an important part of their wardrobe is boots.  Today I would like to take a look at legendary boot maker, Tony Lama.  The company got started in 1911.  Tony Lama became a shoemaker’s apprentice at the age of 11 and from there the rest is history. Within a short time, the demand for Lama’s boots skyrocketed.  To this day, the quality and craftsmanship lives on, with Tony Lama boots being the most highly sought after boot.  They are unparalleled in comfort and design, American made and come a variety of prices and styles.  Time to save my pennies to invest (or I guess nickels since we no longer have pennies in Canada).  Here are a couple of my favourites:

To find these and other beautiful styles check out the Tony Lama website: https://www.tonylama.com

COUNTRY MUSIC:

Ok, I know I said that I was going to look at new releases, but based on the fact that I just covered Tony Lama boots, I think it is only right that we have a discussion about Miranda Lambert.

I have seen her once live and I was left extremely disappointed.  Although I love her music and typically I find her songs either heart-felt or empowering in some way, when I saw her live at the CMA Festival in Nashville, I found her very off-putting.  Don’t hate on me for saying that because what I saw from her was a shade on the disrespectful side.  I watched her put her high heel through a beach ball on stage and throw it back in to the crowd.  Now maybe she has matured or “softened” but this really turned me off from her.  That being said, this blond-headed Texan girl can sing her ass off and I love this song to bits!  Guys and gals, “Little Red Wagon” by Miranda Lambert:

TGIF!

Welcome to the weekend, gang!  After a long, hard week, there is really nothing more relaxing than putting your feet up, having a “cold one” in your hand and catching up on some the things you have missed.  Whether it is breaking your back, chasing after the kids or sitting in front of a computer, everyone needs a little R&R at the end of it.

Let’s get this weekend started right!

CELEBRITY NEWS:

Johnny Cash: American Rebel, A unique documentary about the singer, is slated to make its debut on Sept. 12, 2015 on CMT. The film will highlight the musical and social impact of his music by using 12 of his most important songs as its soundtrack.  The film will be the first time that both Johnny and June’s children have appeared in a film about the Man in Black.  The documentary also includes interviews with a variety of country music legends.  So if you are a Cash fan, you may want to tune in to it.  It promises to reveal some unknown sides to this American legend.

A big congratulations to Kelly Clarkson and family on the announcement of baby number 2!  She and husband Brandon welcomed their daughter River in to the world in  June 2014.  Clarkson, who got emotional while performing at the Staples Center in L.A. on Wednesday night, “spilled the beans” that she was pregnant to the crowd.  She explained, “I just don’t want you to think I’m on pills or drunk or something.”  All the best to Kelly, Brandon and little River!

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Chris Young spoke about what it was like to be implicated in the Blake/Miranda divorce.  Young, who is friends with both of the stars, was quoted as saying, “It’s just so weird getting pulled into something like that where it just wasn’t true.” and he even went so far as to say that he was in constant contact with Shelton as the news broke that day.  The unfortunate rumours apparently have not affected the relationship that Young has with the singers and he maintains that they are all still really great friends despite this.  Young also said, “…That’s kind of a by-product of doing this and being in the spotlight, I guess.”

COUNTRY FASHION:

One essential item that makes up the country ensemble is the faithful trucker cap.  Originally seen worn by truckers in the 70’s, these foam-fronted, mesh-backed hats were usually adorned with some sort of advertising.  It was inexpensive to produce them and they provided comfort for the driver, with the bill shading their eyes from the sun and the re-sizable mesh allowing the head to breath.  As the times changed, so did the hats that people were wearing.  Yet somehow, in the early 2000’s, the trusted trucker hat made a resurgence out of irony.  The hats represented a blue-collar lifestyle, yet the people who reignited the trend happened to be celebrities and suburban teenagers.  As celebrities adopted the style more and more, so did the rest of the world.  And thus, ladies and gentlemen, is the rebirth of the trucker hat.  Of course, in true country fashion, if I am going to feature a picture of this iconic cap, it HAS to be a John Deere:

COUNTRY MUSIC:

It’s Friday and that means it is Rising Star day!  Today I would like to feature an up and coming musician out of Halifax, Nova Scotia by the name of Andrew Frelick.  I spent many summers as a kid on the shores of the Annapolis River, so Nova Scotia holds a very near and dear place in my heart.  When I found out he was from out East – I HAD to write about him! A friend of mine turned me on to Andrew and once I checked him out, I LOVED what I heard.  His looks as dashing as a young Garth Brooks and a voice that has a beautifully clear and rich tone, Frelick is the total package.

Andrew

Andrew was given his first guitar as a child and was performing on stages by the time he was a teenager.  He has a natural comfort being on stage and this shines through during his performances.  He has written many songs on his own and has co-written many others with other writers as well.  He co-founded several bands while trying to focus on his own solo career and it looks like keeping focus on that has served him well!  He has had the opportunity to perform on stage with musicians such as Aaron Pritchett, TJ King and Carroll Baker.  His song, “Spread Some Good Time Around”, finished as a regional semi-finalist on CBC’s Searchlight 2015 contest and reached #18 on “The Iceman’s Top 40 New Artist Countdown”. It also debuted at #12 on “The Spectrum Top 40 Countdown”. Because of the popularity of his song, he was invited to perform in Nashville on June 14th during CMA Fest 2015 on stages sponsored by Robert Golomboski (The Iceman), Nan Cassidy of Tunesmith Entertainment, KORE PR, NStyle Country and 101.5FM THE ONE. This east coaster is really gaining some traction!

I sent Andrew a few questions this week and he was awesome enough to answer them for me!   So here is a segment I would like to call “5 in 5 with Andrew Frelick”:

  1. If you had to describe your guitar (or your favourite guitar), what would you say?  Andrew:  As a bit of a collector I actually have quite a few guitars but I do have one that I use as my main guitar. 2012 60th Anniversary Fender Telecaster Deluxe… Just kinda fits and feels like a well broken in baseball glove. Hard to explain but it’s definitely how it feels that makes it my favourite.
  2. What cheers you up?  Andrew: Music – playing, listening, singing anything … More than cheers me up though… It sets my moods.
  3. What is the first thought you had this morning?  Andrew:  Wonder how my new album “Time Stands Still” is selling since yesterday morning smile emoticon
  4. What is the best piece of advice you have ever gotten?  Andrew:  “You will never make it if your work ethic doesn’t exceed your talent. Even then… Work harder”
  5. What is the last photo you took with your phone?  Andrew:  Picture of one of my 3 kids being her 5 year old diva self.

Check out his website : http://www.andrewfrelick.com/  and follow him on Facebook: andrewfrelickmusic.  He also has a YouTube channel where you can find some of his videos.  If you are lucky enough to be in the area, here is a bit of Andrew’s upcoming schedule:

  • Aug 27th: CD release party for his new album “Time Stands Still” At Beaver Bank Station in Halifax, NS.
  • Sept 9th: MediaWorks during “Live off the Floor” during CCMA Week in Halifax, NS.
  • Sept 11th: CCMA “Diamonds in the Rough” at The Delta in Halifax, NS
  • Sept 13: Boston pizza on Granville St. in Downtown Halifax, NS
  • If you are in Nashville on September 27, Andrew will be performing at The Springs at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel at the Josie Show/Country Blast Radio Award Show & Concert Event.

So to get your weekend kick-started here is “Spread Some Good Time Around” by Andrew Frelick:

Working It Out

Sorry I have been away for a bit – but here is the second post to my shiny new blog!  I have been working out a few things for it regarding formatting and content so I hope you can forgive me.

Let’s get started!

CELEBRITY NEWS:

I don’t know about all ya’ll (yes…I just pulled out a ya’ll), but there is something I love about Dolly Parton!  No guys…I am pretty sure it is not that same thing that YOU love about Dolly Parton.  She just seems so darn sweet and I feel like if she saw that I was sad she’d bake me a pie. It is almost impossible not to have a soft spot for her.  Well, we are all about to get a lot more Dolly in our lives.  According to some news sources there are several made for t.v. projects about Dolly in the works. They will capture her life story as well as tell the story of some of her songs on film.  Two confirmed songs for production include hits “Jolene” and “Coat of Many Colors.”  Here’s to Dolly – country music’s answer to Meryl Streep.  Yes, I also love Meryl and believe she could play Batman if you let her.

If you are planning to be in the Nashville area on November 1st and happen to be a biker, Dierks Bentley announced his 10th annual Miles and Music For Kids Motorcycle Ride and Concert.  This event benefits the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.  The concert is set to include Florida Georgia Line, Thomas Rhett, Cole Swindell, Canaan Smith and The Cadillac 3 and Brooke Eden.  More stars are expected to join the line up as the date nears.  Tickets for this event go on sale August 21.  Hmmm…it may be time to consider buying that Harley I’ve always wanted.

Jennifer Nettles shocked her social media followers this weekend by revealing her newly darkened locks.  The Sugarland lead singer, who had previously been a blond, changed her hair colour to a beautiful rich brown, much to her son’s dismay. According to Nettles, his response was “No, not that one.”  There is speculation that her colour was changed in preparation for her role as Avie, Dolly Parton’s mother, in “Coat of Many Colors”.  I am not sure what you guys think, but I think she looks amazing:

COUNTRY FASHION:

Now this may not qualify as country fashion because technically it is gear girl fashion, but it probably qualifies as “country girl fashion”. There are a number of us out there that like motorcycles, dirt bikes and big trucks.

If this sounds like you then you need to check out Machine Girl.  Started by Tina Stefanson, Machine Girl is made for female riders by female riders.  With everything from tank tops to bikinis, Stefanson’s “Ain’t no model but I can twist a throttle” motto shows the boys that girls can play just as hard and look WAY better doing it:

Machine Girl's photo.    Machine Girl's photo.     Machine Girl's photo.     Machine Girl's photo.

Prices vary, of course and this is just a small sample of what Machine Girl has to offer!  If you are interested in some of this awesome gear for yourself or a friend, you can contact my girl Tina at info@machinegirl.ca and she can hook you up! In the meantime, go ahead and like her Facebook page Machine Girl Clothing and follow her on Instagram at _machinegirl

COUNTRY MUSIC:

I have decided that once a week (on Fridays specifically), we will do the rising star edition of Red, White and Country.  On the other days, I would like to maybe cover some new releases.  Since I have an unabashed love for Blake Shelton, I have decided that the new release of the day will be “Gonna” by Blake Shelton. This is his fourth release from Bringing Back the Sunshine and (as per usual) it is great!  With lyrics such as “Girl I’m diggin’ on hittin’ on you tonight” and “So what’s it gonna take?/What’s it gonna be?/We can pump it on the boulevard/Or kick it in the country” it is easy to see that living in L.A. has not affected his country boy charm. Despite his recent divorce from country diva, Miranda Lambert, Blake has continued to go about his business of being on the set of the The Voice and tweeting smart-ass remarks. I don’t believe this is an “official” video for the song so there is no Blake in it.  Regardless, here it is in all its Glory, “Gonna” by Blake Shelton:

Welcome Aboard!

I am assuming that by checking this blog out that you either a) know me and are AWESOME for wanting to support your friend, b) love anything related to country anything or c) a combination of both.  Regardless of the reason – WELCOME!

This is the first time I have attempted a blog like this, so I guess an appropriate place to start would be by introducing myself and talk about what you’ll find here.  Well, I was born in a town on the Canadian Prairies and love anything country – fashion, music, lifestyle, camo, you name it!  I would love to make my living as a writer, so much that not only have I started writing this blog but I am in the process of writing a novel as well.  Alas, it doesn’t pay the bills (yet) so I have a full-time job with a market research company.  I am married to a guy who isn’t as big in to the country lifestyle as I am, so I really needed a way to get my “redneck ya-ya’s” out and this seemed like a good way to do it 😉

What will you find here.  The intention is to write about…well…country stuff!  From celebrity news to rising stars to who is making some awesome boots these days, we will cover it.  What makes me qualified for this? Not much really!  I only come armed with a fashion merchandising degree and an opinion.

So…let’s get started!

CELEBRITY NEWS:

Ok, let’s just get this out-of-the-way.  News is depressing so I really do not want to put too much focus on sad country news.  But the biggest news really has been the Blake/Miranda split up and the Reba/Narvel split up.  Where Blake and Miranda are concerned, none of us will EVER really know what happened.  That is between them and their lawyers.  It was obvious that things weren’t going well (to some of us anyway) and although I never want to wish it on anyone, I hope that they can move on and find some happiness.  As far as Reba and Narvel are concerned, there have only been reports that divorce is on the horizon, but according to some sources that I have read, they have been separated for some time.  All the best to them.

US 99.5 reported today that the duo Thompson Square is expecting after being married for 16 years!  Congrats to them!!  How cute are they in this FB post:

For the Eric Church fans – you may want to head down to Nashville to the Hall of Fame and check out the Eric Church exhibit opening September 18th and running until February 2016. Read about it here:

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/eric-church-exhibit-coming-to-country-music-hall-of-fame-20150728

COUNTRY FASHION:

Sadly we are moving in to fall.  And if you are Canadian sun worshipper like I am, it can be a pretty dismal time.  I would like fall so much more if it wasn’t a precursor to -40c!  I did source some really sweet country trends to take us in to fall from www.countryliving.com.  From the maxi a-line skirt to a modified barn jacket, these adorable trends will keep you toasty as we move toward colder weather:

http://www.countryliving.com/shopping/g1002/country-chic-fashion-trends-0910

Country chic isn’t your style?  Cabela’s has some awesome new styles for the fall including this:

Realtree MAX-5/Black/Hot Pink

I seriously NEED one!  Check out www.cabelas.ca for many more new items!

COUNTRY MUSIC:

This weekend is We Fest in Detroit Lakes, MN and yours truly will probably NOT be there (sobs quietly in to her baseball cap).  Cash is a bit tight since I went to Craven this year but it was worth every penny to see Blake Shelton again, since I hadn’t seen him since I went to CMA Fest in 2011.  He is playing this weekend along with Dierks Bentley and Miranda Lambert (AWWWKWAARD) to name just a few.  Next time, Blake.  Next time 😦

That being said, I also love to experience new singers..  While visiting Nashville, I had the opportunity to meet rising star Jimmy Charles.  He has a great voice, is super friendly and quite the looker 😉

Jimmy grew up in Maryland and is a graduate of Towson University.  He was a contestant on season 9 of “American Idol” (where he received some high praise from Simon – which is no easy feat).  He was also in the top 50 of “Nashville Star”.  He sings with passion – which is always important for me as a listener.  Jimmy has recently become the spokesperson for the Zero Cancer campaign in an effort to raise awareness and money for the fight against prostate cancer, a cause near and dear to him.  His song “Superman” is the official anthem for the cause.

Right now he mainly plays in Nashville, but check out his website if you are travelling, because he may just be where you are: www.jimmycharlesmusic.com  I highly recommend seeking him out because he doesn’t disappoint!

Well, that’s all I’ve got for today! So to see us out – here is Jimmy Charles “Superman”:
